[ARCHIVED] Miami Township Police Department earns second CALEA accreditation

The Miami Township Police Department has earned CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) accreditation for a second time. The distinction demonstrates the department’s commitment to the highest quality practices and procedures that serve the community.

“I am very proud of our entire staff for their commitment to this community, and to our accreditation manager, Leah O’Malley, who worked countless hours to achieve this honor. We received no infractions during our on-site audit which is a credit to this department and all the hard work everybody put into it,” said Police Chief Charlie Stiegelmeyer. “The CALEA commission is particularly impressed with our community engagement and is pleased with our use-of-force policies, pursuit policies and reporting procedures. With some of the more key topics in the national spotlight right now, it seems that this department is right where it needs to be as of now.”

“Given the news of the past couple of years, it is hard to prove that a police department is doing the right thing, but accreditation is one of the methods to show that you are the gold standard for the policies, procedures and methods that make sure the police department is accountable,” Miami Township Trustee Terry Posey, Jr., said.

The CALEA process includes a review of all department policies and practices compared to internationally accepted public safety standards. Taking part is voluntary, which further demonstrates the Miami Township Police Department’s commitment to professionalism.

Independent assessors also intensely review department practices, gather public feedback and conduct internal interviews with key personnel. CALEA accreditation is a continuous process in which the department must maintain compliance with CALEA standards of excellence. The awarding of a second accreditation remains in effect for four years effective July 16, 2021.
