The Miami Township Police Department, along with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), wants to remind drivers to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over this Fourth of July holiday. Remember that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving. The police department will have extra patrols working to reduce traffic crashes and get drunk drivers off the road, June 30 – July 6, 2025.
“If you are under the influence of alcohol and choose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you put everyone on the road in danger,” Assistant Chief James McCarty, Miami Township Police Department, said. “Plan ahead for a safe celebration and designate a sober driver to get anyone who has had too much to drink home safely.”
According to the NHTSA in 2023, 617 people died in traffic crashes during the Fourth of July holiday. 38-percent of those fatalities involved drunk drivers. All these deaths were preventable. Celebrate the Fourth of July with a safety plan in place:
- Always drive 100 percent sober. Even one alcoholic beverage could be one too many.
- Plan ahead. Before you have even one drink, designate a sober driver to get you home safely. If you wait until you have been drinking to make this decision, you might not make the best one.
- You have options to get home safely. Designate a sober driver or call a taxi or rideshare. Getting home safely is always worth it.
- If it is your turn to be the designated driver, take your job seriously and do not drink.
- If you suspect a drunk driver, call your local law enforcement or dial 911.
