A Note from Montgomery County Auditor Karl L. Keith
Each year, between December 1 through January 31, dog owners register their dogs with local authorities to ensure a safe trip home if their dog is lost, stolen, or missing. State law requires every dog older than three months to have a license.
For $20 per license ($24 for unaltered dogs), dog owners purchase the peace of mind that comes with 24-hour identification, ensuring that their puppy will return home safely and quickly. This also enables the dog owner to avoid a potential $150 ticket for failure to license their pet. There is also a $20 late fee penalty for owners who fail to license their dog before the January 31 deadline.
The Auditor’s Office provides many reasonable, easy opportunities to purchase a license. Web users may purchase a license online. An approximate $2 fee is attached to each online transaction, but up to five dog licenses may be purchased in a single transaction. Several vendors or outposts around the county, such as municipal buildings, pet supply stores, and veterinarian’s offices, sell dog licenses. Dog owners may also receive a postcard in the mail from the auditor reminding them to renew their dog’s license.
Finally, the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center, located at 6790 Webster Street, sells licenses and arranges adoptions of pets Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For questions regarding the purchase of dog licenses, please call the Auditor’s Office at 937-225-4314.
All license fees generated go to support the work of the Animal Resource Center. Donations to the Animal Resource Center such as $5 for a bone shaped dog tag or $10 or more for a heart shaped dog tag go directly to the operation of the Animal Resource Center for the rescue, care, and housing of our community’s lost and homeless pets.
