Lyons Road Pedestrian Access Project to begin October 15

Lyons Road 750x562

A construction project implementing recommendations put forth in the Dayton Mall Area Master Plan to improve pedestrian access in the Miami Crossing District in Miami Township is set to begin October 15, 2018. The township is working alongside the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) and the Montgomery County Transportation Improvement District (MCTID) to complete the project along a stretch of Lyons Road leading to SR 741. Among them:

  • A 10 feet wide asphalt walk along the south side of Lyons Road from Byers Road, excluding the bridge.
  • A 14 feet wide path along the south side of the Lyons Road bridge over I-75 will allow for a barrier across the bridge.
  • An 8 feet wide concrete walk along the west side of SR 741 from Lyons Road to connect to an existing walk to allow for safer pedestrian access.
  • Curbs and gutters will be added to the length of the project.
  • Lyons Road will be resurfaced within the project limits, excluding the bridge.

“Township residents should know that the local match funding for these improvements is coming exclusively from the Tax Increment Financing District set up for purposes like these. The business community is supporting the safety of residents; no residential property tax money is being used,” Trustee President John Morris said.

Traffic will be maintained along Lyons Road and SR 741, but it will be shifted away from construction zones for the safety of workers and the public. The MCTID says a minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on Lyons Road, with the intent to minimize the impact of traffic. Construction is expected to be complete in June 2019.

According to the MCTID, the total cost of the project is $1.8 million with $1.06 million coming from a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Grant. The grant was secured through the township’s membership in the MVRPC. The Miami Township Board of Trustees voted on Oct. 9, 2018, to approve a loan agreement for $584,200 with the Ohio Department of Transportation’s State Infrastructure Bank (SIB) for the local share of project costs among ODOT, MCTID and the township. A promissory note from the township and MCTID was also approved (Resolution #99-2018).
