Miami Township Police is accepting resumes from individuals who would like to join our team of dedicated public safety professionals. Miami Township, with a population of approximately 29,000 (unincorporated area) and 51 ,000 combined, is five miles south of Dayton, Ohio. Our thriving township boasts a diverse business climate, mixed housing stock, and exceptional schools. We have an authorized strength of 41 officers that cover an area of 20.87 miles. The Police Department is accredited with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
The selected candidates will join the Chief in supervising subordinate supervisors who direct employees in the Operations or Professional Services components of the department. Candidates must have a minimum of five years' service in law enforcement supervision at the level of Sergeant or above. Candidates must have an Associated Degree (2-year degree from an accredited college/university). Extensive command and executive level experience combined with specialized training such as the F.B.I. National Academy, Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (O.P.O.T.A.), Southern Police Institute, Certified Law Enforcement Executive (C.L.E.E.), Police Executive Leadership College (P.E.L.C.), and/or a 4-year degree from accredited college/university is preferred and greatly desired. The organization(s) that grant the accreditation must be officially approved as an accrediting agency by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Candidates must have strength in inter-personal skills, leadership, employee motivation, and an advanced knowledge of current law enforcement strategies. Candidates must also have a proven degree of high personal and professional integrity, strong organization, management and communication skills. Candidates require experience with the community oriented policing philosophy, significant labor-management experience, and grant funding.
Candidates must have a valid Ohio driver's license and current Ohio peace officer training certification. Candidates must be bondable and comply within the residency requirements as approved by the Board of Trustees when hired. Preferred qualification include experience in CALEA and in facilitating CALEA certification, familiarity with police budgets, experience in restructuring of an agency, experience in handling payroll, and proven leadership skills.
The Miami Township Police Captain pay range is $85,966.40 to $96,220.80 and includes an outstanding benefits package. Starting pay will be offered based on knowledge, skills and experience. The qualification process will include oral interviews and an assessment center conducted by an independent law enforcement consulting firm. The Township reserves the right to include other standard screening steps as deemed necessary- to include review of past work performance, a background investigation, truth verification, psychological testing, physical and drug screening, etc.
The Police Chief of Miami Township in consultation with the Township Administrator reserve the right to interview any applicant(s) who meet all qualifications. Miami Township reserves the right to hire any of the top three candidates. Hiring will be determined based upon a combination on several factors. Evaluations from an independent law enforcement consulting firm, recommendations from the interview board, academic background and prior work experience will all be considered.
